Why this site shows km and miles, kg and lbs, and why physicists don't bother with miles at all.
You've probably noticed this site shows distances in km and miles, weight in kg and lbs. That's on purpose: visitors come from all over the globe, and most of the world reads metric while the US (plus Liberia and Myanmar) still runs on customary units day-to-day. Here's the difference, and why scientists picked a side a long time ago.
Metric was born out of the French Revolution in 1793, designed to be rational and universal: the meter was originally defined as one ten-millionth of the distance from the North Pole to the equator. US customary units survive mostly through inertia: they work fine for everyday life, and the cost of switching a whole country's road signs, tools, and habits is enormous.
Every calculator on this site does its math in metric under the hood, even the ones that show mph or lbs first.
Kelvin (K) is the same size as a Celsius degree, but it starts counting from a different place: absolute zero, the point where atoms carry the least possible thermal energy, instead of an arbitrary spot like "where water freezes." That's the whole point of Kelvin: in physics equations, temperature should never be able to go negative, and Kelvin guarantees that.
Absolute zero sits at 0 K, −273.15 °C, −459.67 °F. It's a theoretical floor: the third law of thermodynamics says you can get arbitrarily close but never actually reach it. Labs have cooled atoms to within billionths of a degree of absolute zero, but never all the way.
It matters far beyond the lab: the cosmic microwave background (the leftover glow of the Big Bang, filling all of deep space) sits at just 2.7 K. Superconductors and quantum computers need near-absolute-zero cooling to function. Cryogenic fuel for rockets is stored at temperatures that would make Kelvin's usefulness obvious to anyone standing nearby.
Once you leave Earth, kilometers and miles get unwieldy fast, so astronomers use yardsticks built for the job.
