🩸 Why does the Moon turn red during a total lunar eclipse? Even fully inside Earth's shadow, the Moon isn't in total darkness. Sunlight grazing Earth's atmosphere gets bent (refracted) into the shadow, and Earth's air scatters away the blue end of that light far more than the red end, the same effect that makes sunsets red. What's left over, bent inward and reddened, is what lights up the eclipsed Moon. You're looking at every sunrise and sunset on Earth happening at once, projected onto the lunar surface.

Eclipse dates, greatest-eclipse times, and visibility regions above come from published NASA/GSFC-derived eclipse predictions, the same multi-year-ahead calculations professional almanacs use, since eclipses follow predictable orbital mechanics (the Saros cycle) decades in advance.

The visibility check works differently: a lunar eclipse happens at full moon, when the Moon sits opposite the Sun in the sky, so the Moon is up whenever the Sun is down. The checker fetches sunrise/sunset times for your coordinates (via sunrise-sunset.org) around the eclipse date and tests whether the moment of greatest eclipse falls after your sunset and before your next sunrise. It's a good rule of thumb, not a substitute for checking local moonrise/moonset near the horizon.

Solar eclipses aren't personalized this way: their visibility is a narrow, curving path across specific ground tracks rather than "night vs. day," so only the general regions are listed. Check NASA's eclipse site for exact local circumstances.
